|Growing up, I remember my mom as always being pretty active. We were lucky to live in places with an abundance of outdoor activities, so we spent a fair amount of our weekends and vacations hiking, biking, and skiing. But with a busy career and two young children to attend to, I don’t remember exercise being a part of her everyday life at that time.
She seemed to really hit her peak in the last couple of years though, after my brother and I had finished up with school and moved out of the house. Maybe it was her way of keeping busy as she adjusted to an empty nest, but she joined a group of other active ladies around her age, meeting a few times a week – biking in the warmer months, and cross-country skiing during the winter. These activities have become a part of her daily life, and though she turns 60 in the next couple of years, I don’t think she’ll be slowing down anytime soon! I went for a long bike ride with her last summer while I was home for a visit, and while I hate to admit it, I had a hard time keeping up with her!
